TLDR; Bulky Movers LLC, grossly underestimated the job, was not prepared, damaged our stuff and ghosted us when trying to get them to file insurance claims
Learn from us, do not use Bulky Movers LLC if you care about your stuff. We moved with them at the end of May (2022) from California to Pennsylvania and it did not go well. They damaged 16 pieces of our belongings, some unimportant but many expensive and/or sentimental items that were extremely important to us. When we pointed out the damage while unpacking Max was very dismissive of the damage, claiming that it will be very easy to fix. Max had assured us that they were insured and that he would file claims for any damaged items. I documented with photos the items as they were unloaded from the truck and one that we found later that were packed (by Bulky Movers) and sent them to Bulky movers with no response. I have emailed texted and called, and still have yet to hear back from them. As of this writing, it’s been three weeks since I sent the list of damaged items. Nothing, no response.
On the day of the move they showed up on time (at the end of the 2 hour window). In came Max, a guy named Robin who seemed to be part of Bulky Movers, but it was unclear his role and about 6-8 movers. The truck they drove up in had a different name on it, it did not say Bulky Movers LLC. They came in and looked at our stuff for about five minutes, then went back to the truck.
After about twenty minutes, Max and Robin came back to us and said the driver was crazy, and that he left. They were a little avoidant telling me exactly what happened. But it seems what I could piece together from how it played out is, Bulky Movers does not actually do the moving they subcontracted out the moving work with another company. The subcontracted company came in and looked at our stuff and realized that Max had underestimated the number of boxes and how much space would be required. The experienced subcontractors took one look and said no way. Max said that they were going to take longer than agreed to deliver our stuff, so he sent them away. He did not consult with us before making this decision.
So where does that leave us? It’s been about an hour, and we have two guys who don’t normally do the heavy lifting, with no truck and no packing equipment. Max said he will take care of it, he was going to find a truck and come back. They rented a truck from Penske, but the truck was about 40 miles away. In the Bay Area, that means at least an hour drive one way. This was the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, so traffic was bad. They left at noon, they returned back at 4:30 with two more guys (who from what I gathered already worked a whole day at Max’s rug business) and a handful of boxes, some shrink wrap and some packing blankets.
After they had been packing for about five or six hours I suggested we call it a night, that way they could take a break and get some more boxes and start again fresh in the morning. Max assured me that there was just 45 minutes or an hour left and they’d finish up.
At some point I had stepped away into another room to grab some food, and they packed some of our belongings that we had specifically told them were going with us in the car we were driving. These were essential items, like our blow up mattress that we were sleeping on that night. Max and team had to spend about half an hour unpacking the truck in order to find them. The truck was overstuffed and couldn’t fit all of our stuff. We had to leave lots of things behind.
After delivering our belongings we pointed out the damage to the big obvious items. Max immediately became dismissive and tried put the blame elsewhere.
Please please please do not give them your business. They are not equipped with the understanding, skills or ability it takes to run a moving company. Cut out the middle people and hire an experienced, capable actual moving company that doesn’t just subcontract the work. You’ll probably get a better deal and have less of your stuff damaged.
